THE GREEK SAYS: Out of the mouths of babes.
Is it me? Something smells a little different this time. I’ve thought for some time that it’s not working and we need a change. We’ve tried it this way long enough.
There’s a fear amongst a lot of decent people that any sort of meaningful control of gun-ownership would cause a slippery-slope response by the government and it would start confiscating all guns. Regardless of how intense that fear is, it really is theoretical, right?. Well, I’m prepared to take that risk. And it seems more and more are as well.
A couple things …
First, I don’t think it’s actually that big of a risk because I don’t think the government could or would get to that point in this society. Granted, that’s also theoretical – my theory – no more and no less valid than any other. Second, any chance that we can actually keep those with “issues” from getting their hands on the kind of weapon that allows them to single-handedly snuff out human life en masse is a chance we must take.
Now, I’ve definitely been one to look sideways at today’s youth – obsessed with the screen, hyper-sensitive to criticism, too coddled by helicopter parents – but they have shamed me this week. Shamed all adults who allowed things to get this bad. They’re absolutely right and they’re absolutely righteous. I saw those kids from Florida staking a claim on their future with the mandate that “we will NOT live like this” and I felt awash in regret and remorse for passing to them a way of life that – in addition to the racism and homophobia and sexism and general disregard for each other – is goddamned infatuated with guns. They’re little machines that explode chunks of steel into other people’s flesh and organs, ripping bodies apart and destroying lives in a ripple fashion that damages long after that chunk has fallen motionless. That is what they are. That is what they do.
It’s time for a new way of thinking. We’ve seen it as both the protectors and protected learn more about what it means to be that thin blue line. We’ve seen it as women are staking their own claim – taking control of the way they’re treated by men who believe that humans are fundamentally divided into two classes, one there to serve the other’s desires no matter how obscene, twisted or hurtful. And, I think, we’re now seeing it from those of us who have much more time left than time passed.
The future belongs to those destined to actually live it. I’m with them. And proud to be.
