What to do when preparing for a storm:

  • Use flashlights for lighting, when possible. Candles have the potential for disaster.
  • When the power goes out, turn off electrical devices you were using before it did. This will help avoid surges and potential damage to your devices.
  • Back up your laptops, your phones, tablets- anything that you must have.  Store the info on CD’s or external hard drives. Take these with you if you evacuate.
  • Before the storm hits, take pictures- of everything. Your property, your furniture, your car, your house, your pets.. everything. You may need these for insurance claims, or if your pets go missing.
  • Store important paperwork – birth certificates, social security cards in water proof containers, ziploc baggies, anything to keep them safe.  Take these items with you if you evacuate.
  • Draw cash from the ATM. If the power is out, stores may not be able to process your cards.
  • If you have an electric garage door opener, find the manual release.
  • Fill your bathtub with water. You can use this to flush if necessary, wash, etc.
  • Fill empty containers with water- including your washing machine.
  • Keep water that you will consume safe- boil for one full minute and cool for 30.  Or add 16 drops of unscented chlorine bleach per gallon of water. Let stand 30 minutes. Do this BEFORE the power goes out.
  • Follow generator directions. Do not use indoors, including inside a garage, due to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup. Have adequate ventilation and follow proper refueling practices.
  • Be sure to let the generator cool down before refueling
  • If you plan to evacuate, be sure to let someone know. Your family, your neighbors, someone. Tell them where you are going and how you can be reached.
