(CLEARWATER, Fla.) -- Former New York Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon lobbied for the Yankees vacant outfielding job on Tuesday, but general manager Brian Cashman isn't interested.
Damon expressed interest in returning to his former club, but the Yankees are intent on going with what they have on their current roster.
"He's just not going to fit our needs," Cashman said. "It's the same reason we didn't bring him in last year. We need somebody who can play the outfield every day."
The Yankees have veteran outfielders Matt Diaz and Juan Rivera on the roster and could look to go with some of the young prospects Zoilo Almonte, Adonis Garcia, Melky Mesa or Ronnier Mustelier.
"We're going to evaluate what we have in camp," Cashman said. "I'm not looking outside at this stage. My first response, always, to a loss, is to make sure we don't have what we need right here in front of us."
