(TUSCALOOSA, Ala.) -- Longtime University of Alabama athletic director Mal Moore resigned on Wednesday due to health issues. He will stay on with the school as a special assistant to university President Judy Bonner.
"As many of you may know, due to factors related to my health, I am at a point that I can no longer fulfill my duties as athletics director in the true championship manner the position requires," said Moore in a statement released by the school. "While I have to focus on my health issue, I look forward to maintaining an ongoing working relationship with this great university as special assistant to Dr. Bonner.”
Moore took over as athletic director in 1999. He was instrumental in hiring head coach Nick Saban away from the Miami Dolphins in 2007. That move resulted in the Crimson Tide winning three of the last four national titles under Saban’s watch.
Moore has been part of 10 national championship football teams at Alabama as a player, coach and athletic director.
